As Abundant Harvest Fellowship International continues its series entitled: Battling Unbelief, Pastor L.A. Lopez discusses Micah 6:3-5 which is the scripture text for his message- What Have I Done To You?
“O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherein have I wearied thee? testify against me. For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of servants; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab consulted, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him from Shittim unto Gilgal; that ye may know the righteousness of the Lord.”
The prophet Micah speaks for the Lord as he utters in verse 3 of Chapter 6 the word of the King to his people: “My people, what have I done to you, And how have I wearied you? Answer Me.” This is the question of our God who has given everything His people can hope for, salvation, deliverance, blessing, life but time and time again; the people of the Lord stood unfaithful to the King, disloyal to the One who gave them life, hope and a future. Studying the text, the historical situation is entirely not clear- though we can ascertain that; this query could have been given during the reign of King Hezekiah in the late eighth century. At the same time, hints of exilic and postexilic periods (e.g., rebuilding city walls; restoring national boundaries) may reflect expansions of the text over the years in view of new community situations. Now the passage indicates several things, first off; there is controversy between God and Israel, the language of a “Covenant Lawsuit” is sometimes used in this text as though God has called the nation of Israel, His people to lay on the table their grievances, lay on the table their reasoning for their adultery against Him. It is an emotional question, a question that painfully lingers as it is toned with exasperation. In tagalog; Ano ba ang ginawa ko sa yo? What have I done to deserve your ire, your hateful attitude, your adultery and disloyalty? The question is rhetorical yet unlike some who would use this, God does not use this accusingly but poses the question with immense hurt, immense pain & sorrow. As a father who has done all he can to ensure his children’s safety, success and wellness; yet is met with rebellion, met with disdain, with hate.
Pastor L.A. states –
“All that God has done is for us to give us a hope and future, to ensure our greatest good by sending forth His only begotten Son to be nailed on that cross, to carry our sin and rise up a sacrifice that our lives be spared from judgement. Yet how do we answer Him? How do we respond to such goodness, to His amazing love? Thus what God requires of us is simply put; Grateful Law Keeping. We who have been saved by grace are called to live a life of grateful law keeping, humbling each day for the rest of our lives before Him with godly fear and reverence which is our way of saying thank you Lord for all you have done.”
