As Abundant Harvest Fellowship International continues its series entitled: Battling Unbelief, Pastor L.A. Lopez discusses 1 Corinthians 2:14-16 which is the scripture text for his message- What Have I Done To You?
1 Corinthians 2:14-16
But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. 15 But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one. 16 For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he will instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ.
The apostle Paul states the basic division of all humans which is set to two classes; the first division is the Natural man/ woman, and the second is the spiritual man/ woman. Now these are the basic divisions. Those of the world, who seek the world and those who are for God and seek God. The third we can glean from this text is the inability of those without the mind of Christ, without the spirit of God to understand the things of God for they are foolishness, for the Holy Spirit is not with him. Now, what is the Natural man? The word for “natural man” or “psuchikos” is used one other time in the New Testament to refer to people, namely, in Jude 19, which says, “It is these who set up divisions, worldly people (i.e., natural people), devoid of the Spirit.” Natural people are defined here as people who do not have God’s Spirit. They are simply ordinary people whose hearts and minds are not touched with the renewing work of the Holy Spirit. They are further identified as the unregenerated people, who are governed by their natural instincts as found in 2 Peter 2:12, they are under Satan’s dominion for they are enslaved to their bodies and their passions. They belong to the world and their sympathy lies with it as found in James 4:4. These people cannot understand the ways of God thus they rely on human reasoning & emotion. 1 Corinthians 2:14 – “But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.” The opposite of the “natural man” is the “spiritual man” or Pneumatikos—a person whose mind and heart are renewed by the Spirit, or is identified as a regenerated person. 1 Corinthians 2:12 confirms this. “Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is from God, that we might understand the gifts bestowed on us by God.” This person is spiritually minded and thinks the thoughts of God. He lives by the spirit of God, Such an individual believes in Jesus Christ, strives to follow the leading of the indwelling Spirit and resists sensual desires and sin’s dominion. Romans 8:13-14 states – “For if you are living according to the flesh, you [f]must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” One becomes a spiritual man/woman by putting to death the deeds of the flesh, being born again, renewed completely thus becoming a new creation. Regenerated by the power of the Holy Spirit. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” The third type of person is called, the worldly christian. Paul notes this in 1 Corinthians 3:1-3 – “And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able, 3 for you are still fleshly. For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking [a]like mere men?” Now don’t be confused when I use this term. The term Christian does not make them true believers, but those with questionable faith; we are speaking of those who want the best of both worlds, double minded people – adulterers; who desire the world and desire God. They want the best of two, compromising righteousness to obtain the good of the world by delving briefly in the bad. They desire the world and find pleasure in sin; but still desire to be counted as part of God’s people.
Pastor L.A. states –
“The end point to this is simple, if you desire eternity; don’t mix your faith up. If you want Christ; abandon the world and kill sin in your life.If you want to stand in the faith; one must purify themselves. 2 Corinthians 7:1- Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. Dear saints, only one of the three kinds can have the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit, ergo only one can ascertain the word of God and truly embrace it as power; taking hold of salvation as most precious, only one has the mind of Christ – my question today is; which one are you of the three? Which one do you exude?”
